Storage Tek
Storage Tek is an American company that has a computer data archiving system called Timberwolf that is essentially a number of Digital Linear Tape (DLT) drives (20G/tape), accessed by SCSI-2 and a robotic retrieval system that is controlled by Ethernet. This system can only be extended in a non-transparent manner by adding more complete systems. They also have larger systems that operate in the same manner, Wolfcreek and Powderhorn, which can be extended in a transparent modular fashion. These latter two systems use D3 tape drives (50G/tape) for higher density and reliability. Powderhorn is a larger capacity system similar to Wolfcreek with up to 6000 D3 tapes, compared to 1000 for Wolfcreek. These systems can be used successfully for storage and retrieval of compressed video data such as MPEG1, but are not so well suited to storing higher bandwidth lightly or losslessly compressed audio/visual data, if such an archive were required.
