Management An on-line Multimedia Delivery System needs to be able to store, manage and deliver large amounts of digitally encoded material. It needs to first be able to deliver material to an end-user - that is, encode, store, serve, deliver and decode.

Additional systems then need to be put in place to make the technology fulfill various needs. Some of these additional systems are the indexing and search functions, billing, access security and copy control.

The software required to implement an on-line Multimedia Delivery System can be broken down into four main areas - Encoding Software, Media Serving Software, Management Software and End-User Software. The interaction between these systems is shown in the diagram below.
